Welcome to the
latest project we are running at MTG Twincast. We
have decided that it would be a lot of fun and a very creative exercise to
create a new Magic card, which is intrinsically bad! That’s right, we are not
contemplating building the next monster to dominate standard, but in fact the
next Chimney Imp, or One with Nothing, the choice is
yours!
To quote Mark Rosewater, Head Magic Designer at
Wizards speaking about Making Magic
“I
have to take the steps that I (and once again, all the other people making Magic)
feel are right. That means making bad
cards on purpose. That means banning cards. That means occasionally
shifting the color pie. That means removing cards you
like from the base set. And that means stopping spoilers any way we can.”
Bad cards are
part of the game, now we want to make one. It is just as creatively difficult
to make a bad card as a good one. Sure you can just take any creature and add 3
to its’ mana cost, but we want
to do more than this, One with Nothing is creative, as is Mudhole,
they are just very limited in application.
Bad cards fall
into many categories and over the coming weeks we will be looking at what makes
a card bad and developing our submission.
Once we have
completed our bad card we will submit it to Wizards of the Coast with the hope
that it will be used in a future expansion. Who knows, the card you help design
here could be coming round 14-15th pick in a booster draft near you!
